Title: [Changes in internal migration of households]. Author: Corona Vazquez R. Journal: Demos; 1997; (10):19-21. PubMed ID: 12158084. Abstract: During the 1990s, internal migration patterns in Mexico have consolidated trends initiated in the 1980s toward urban-urban rather than rural-urban migration, and toward greater volume of movement. Data from the 1992 National Survey of Demographic Dynamics indicate that 35.9% of Mexicans had migrated permanently at some time. 18,178,000 had moved from one state to another, 10,764,000 had moved between municipios in the same state, and 1,573,000 returned to Mexico after living in the US. 359,000 migrated to Mexico from the US and other countries. The same survey indicated that Mexico's 85,966,000 inhabitants lived in 18,087,000 households, 12,385,000 of which contained the 30,874,000 migrants. 68.5% of households included at least 1 migrant. The most recent migration occurred before 1987 for 8,271,000 households (45.7%) and during 1987-92 for 2,120,000 households (11.7%). The other 1,994,000 households (11.0%) contained persons migrating both before and after 1987. 585,000 households contained return migrants from the US. 6,332,000 households migrated as family groups. The proportions of households with migrants increased from 47.1% in localities with under 2500 inhabitants to 57.9% in localities with 2500-19,999, 69.3% in localities with 20,000-99,999, and 82.6% in localities with more than 100,000 inhabitants. 58,436,000 persons lived in the households with permanent migrants.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
