Title: Pakistan: world's largest ever house-to-house mop-up. Journal: Polio news; 1999 Jun; (4):2. PubMed ID: 12158276. Abstract: The WHO and health officials launched a massive house-to-house immunization campaign in Pakistan's Sindh Province, which was considered the largest mopping-up operation ever conducted, reaching a record 6.5 million children in a high-risk area. The collaborative effort of the government of Pakistan, the WHO, the UN Children's Fund, Rotary International, and other partners reached an estimated 10% more children than the country's last and most successful National Immunization Days (NIDs). Mopping-up campaigns are now a major focus for the "home stretch" of polio eradication, particularly for the high-risk areas in countries that are a global reservoir of poliovirus. The disease prevalence in Pakistan dramatically declined because of routine immunization and 6 years of NIDs; however, still almost 7% of the world's reported polio cases occurred in Pakistan last year, where half of these could be found in Sindh.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
