Title: Barbados. Author: United States. Department of State. Bureau of Public Affairs. Journal: Backgr Notes Ser; 1987 Jun; ():1-4. PubMed ID: 12177950. Abstract: Barbados is a Caribbean island nation that has had a stable British government since 1639, and then independence after 1966, according to this background paper by the US State Department. As a result its population of 250,000 is 99% literate, has an infant mortality rate of 26 and a life expectancy of 71 years. Barbados is densely populated at 587 per square km. The government-supported family planning program has been effective, along with heavy emigration, to hold down population growth to 0.5%/year. The economy is based on sugar, tourism and light industry, producing a per capita income of $4430. Barbados has no natural resources; unemployment is 18%; the price of sugar products exported is subsidized; and imports exceed exports by $300 million.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
