Abstract: This discussion of Maldives focuses on: the people; geography; history; government and political conditions; economy; foreign relations; and relations between the US and Maldives. The population of Maldives was estimated at 168,000 in 1983 with an annual growth rate of 3.2%. The infant mortality rate was 88/1000 with a life expectancy of 46.5 years. Only about 200 of the 1200 islands are inhabited. The population is scattered throughout the country, with the greatest concentration on the capital island of Male. Due to poor soil and limited availability of cultivable land, agriculture is limited to a few subsistence crops. In recent years Maldives has been successful in marketing its natural assets for tourism. In 1981 receipts from fish exports totaled $7.2 million, from tourism $18.3 million, and from shipping (net) $3 million.
