  • Title: [Adolescence and sexuality].
    Author: Reynoso M.
    Journal: Familia; 1984; 2(2):21-4. PubMed ID: 12178200.
    Abstract:
Because over 1/2 of the Dominican Republic's popultion is under 18 years of age, the average age at 1st union is about 17 years, and almost 1/5 of births are to women under 20, the family planning organization Profamilia in 1980 decided to organize special programs for the adolescent population, which lacked sex education programs. Initial activities consisted of talks and roundtables on themes such as sex education and responsible parenthood at cultural and sports organizations, which were widely distributed in Santo Domingo. In 1982, Profamilia began a training course for youth leaders and club directors on family life and sex education. The 1st pretests indicated that the level of knowledge was very low. The percentage of correct scores at the 1st pretest and posttest were 49.7% and 69.3% on "myths and tabus concerning human sexuality", 65.5% and 85.8% on "anatomy and physiology of the sex organs", 51.2% and 83.6% on contraceptive methods, and 45.5% and 71.3% on sexually transmitted diseases. The pretest indicated that a high proportion of youth believed masturbation caused headaches, homosexuality, and impotence; many respondents believed that drugs and alcohol were sexual stimulants; most could not identify the woman's fertile period; the level of knowledge about contraception was low, 1/2 could not identify the female sexual organs on a diagram, and knowledge of sexually transmitted diseases was inadequate. Posttest results indicated that the project objective had been met and that participants had sufficient knowledge to begin working as "multipliers" in their clubs and neighborhoods. A process of interchange of ideas through talks, meetings, and discussions has begun in the 3 areas where the course was conducted. It is recommended that the program continue because of the contribution it can make to Profamilia's goals and objectives.
