Title: Different roads to a common goal: the lowering of infant mortality rates in Latin America. Author: Betancourt JF. Journal: Rev Geogr Inst Panam Geogr Hist; 1988; (107):49-66. PubMed ID: 12178388. Abstract: Recent trends in infant mortality in the countries of Latin America are analyzed. Particular attention is paid to the similarities and differences among Cuba, Costa Rica, and Chile, the three countries that have achieved rates of infant mortality lower than 20 per 1,000. The author concludes that the example of these three countries shows that it is possible to reduce infant mortality significantly before underdevelopment and poverty are eliminated by means of improving the basic health infrastructure.
