Title: HIV vulnerability and mobile populations: Thailand and its borders. Author: Beesey A. Journal: Dev Bull; 2000 Jun; (52):38-41. PubMed ID: 12179447. Abstract: In Thailand, increasing mobility has contributed to the spread of HIV. This is most noticeable in the north, where three adjoining provinces have been noted as the center of the Thai HIV/AIDS epidemic. The provinces of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Phayao have been expanding centers of trade, which includes smuggling and other illicit activities. These internal and cross-border sites are clearly linked with economic development, trade, and sexual services, subsequently contributing to the spread of HIV in Thailand and beyond. In view of such, it is recommended that internal migration and mobility must be examined for risk situations and the factors that make people vulnerable. Cross-border migrants also need to be studied in their places of origin, the routes they take and their destination points.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
