    Abstract:
A case study is presented of the implementation of the extention approach of a natural family planning (NFP) program in Patna, Bihar State, India. The methodology used was idiographic approach. The Patna NFP Program offers 2 solutions to the problems facing Patna and in general the Bihar--to control population and to create alternative structures to implement developmental projects. These solutions were the provision of a natural family planning method implemented by a voluntary organization. NFP was defined as a method to regulate fertility by timing the intercourse during the menstrual period, either to achieve or avoid pregnancy. The NFP program derived its value content from the Catholic belief system: as a way of life; and its prolife elements. Conservative sexual attitudes were shown to be related to satisfaction with the NFP method. The NFP Program in Patna opened its 1st office in Chajjubagh, Patna in 1976. The organizational structure of Patna NFP Center is simple. The NFP work is concentrated in Patna Municipal Corporation area (urban) and in a few outlying villages in Phulwari Taluk. The NFP teachers work in teams; each team consists of 3 teachers. The NFP teachers visit each zone in a team forming "centers." The work of NFP teachers consists of teaching the NFP method to women and following up these women to determine whether they are practicing NFP and to help the women in case of any problems. A drawback of the Patna NFP Program is the lack of precisely defined goals. The present type of supervision is mostly of the inspection type, but a more instructive type of supervision would be helpful to the NFP teachers. The diffuser incentive scheme can be continued to boost the performance of the Patna Program. In regard to performance, the Patna Program has surpassed all other NFP Programs in India in terms of absolute number of acceptors.
