Title: Bosnia-Herzegovina: a case study in service collapse. Safe motherhood. Author: Omeragic F. Journal: Entre Nous Cph Den; 1998; (38):12. PubMed ID: 12222291. Abstract: In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the concentration of reproductive health care services in city hospitals caused unnecessary delays during peacetime. However, when war broke out during the recent crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the effect of the urban concentration of services was disastrous. Many hospitals were either destroyed or seriously damaged, expensive equipment was lost, and a critical shortage of basic medicines soon developed. Many specialist health professionals fled the country, while those who remained were overwhelmed with the needs of the war wounded. Family planning and antenatal services became a very low priority during the war, with very few women receiving regular check-ups. A range of easily preventable health problems soon escalated to chronic levels, and rates of perinatal and maternal mortality, as well as of prematurity, soared during the conflict. The rising rates of unwanted pregnancies and abortions was another clear sign of the deterioration of Bosnia and Herzegovina's reproductive health services.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
