Title: Catholic support for the ICPD programme of action. Author: Kissling F. Journal: Entre Nous Cph Den; 1999; (43-44):13. PubMed ID: 12222315. Abstract: The Vatican's opposition on the implementation of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) program and other policies has caused many to question its international policy role in the UN. Over the years, while the Holy See cannot vote in the General Assembly, they can make as many interventions as the member states it sits with in most UN conferences. During the ICPD+5 conference, the Holy See opposed numerous proposals, including those that would call for the provision of emergency contraception to refugees and the promotion of education and use of condoms for safeguarding against HIV/AIDS. Furthermore, they opposed the protection of adolescent's rights to privacy and confidentiality in reproductive health matters, the inclusion of sex education in school curricula, and the training and equipping of health care workers to ensure safety and accessibility of abortion where it is legal. This position has been questioned by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), such as the Youth Delegation and a wide coalition of women's organizations in light of the Church's strong commitment to the poor and marginalized, many of who are women. In addition, a "See Change" campaign has been sanctioned by hundreds of NGOs, which changes the Church's current status at the UN to an NGO.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
