  • Title: Health action is: more than just a health issue.
    Author: Fustukian S, Macdonald J, Hughes H, Klouda T.
    Journal: HealthAction; 1994; (10):2. PubMed ID: 12222417.
    Abstract:
Despite the fact that the primary health care movement emphasized on developing health systems that promote general well-being, it has largely overlooked sexual health. Sexual health embraces many well-known program areas such as maternal and child health, family planning, reproductive health and rights, and HIV/AIDS prevention and care, but it also encompasses emotional well-being and self-identity. It includes all those factors that enable people to enjoy and manage sexual and reproductive behavior. It includes the quality of sexual and other close relationships. Highlighting sexual health does not mean promoting another program area. Responding to people's sexual health needs involves helping people to express their concerns, then working with them to provide relevant services and support. However, working on sexual health requires a knowledge and understanding of human sexuality. Particular attention should be paid to young people. Health workers need to collaborate with related programs to provide a more adequate response to people's needs.
