Title: Demographic characteristics of women applying for interruption of pregnancy in Israel, 1991. Author: Israel. Central Bureau of Statistics. Journal: Mon Bull Stat U N Stat Off; 1993 Nov; 44(11 Suppl.):1-30. PubMed ID: 12233682. Abstract: This publication presents demographic data on women who applied for an induced abortion in 1991, according to the penal law of 1977. The data are based upon standard Ministry of Health and Central Bureau of Statistics forms filed in 1991 by women who applied to one of the committees for approval of pregnancy interruption. Of 18,016 applications presented, 17,225 were approved, 698 were rejected, and 93 were not yet decided upon. There was a slight rise in the percentage of approvals between 1988 and 1991. In 1991, the rate of application to committees for induced abortion was 16.2/1000 women aged 15-44 years, a decrease of 1-2/1000 compared with 1988-90. The maximum rates of slightly more than 20/1000 were among women aged 25-29 and 30-34. The level of demand for induced abortion is similar to that in most West European countries. In terms of breakdown by marital status, however, the level of demand is similar to that in East European countries. As in previous years, almost 60% of applicants were married women and approximately 32% were from unmarried women.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
