    Abstract:
Changes in serum gonadotropins in menstruating women in response to oophorectomy were investigated. Serum luteinizing hormone (LH) and foll icle stimulating hormone (FSH) were measured prior to and following oophorectomy in 7 women with regular menstrual cycles. An initial decline in LH and FSH which persisted for 1-5 days following oophorectomy was seen in 6 of the 7 women. LH and FSH then slowly rose more rapidly than LH levels. 1 subject demonstrated a rapid increase in LH and FSH levels similar to the normal midcycle surge. The levels then returned to presurgical levels by the 2nd postoperative day and then slowly increased to postmenopausal levels, suggesting that once the midcycle surge is initiated, the factors responsible for the postsurgical LH and FSH depression in the other subjects were not operative. The data also suggest that once the signal for the midcycle surge has been initiated the surge occurs despite oophorectomy.
