Title: (The effects of chronic exposure to CO-SO2 mixed gases on the gestation pattern of the rats.). Author: Yun DR. Journal: Seoul J Med; 1975 Dec; 16(4):242-6. PubMed ID: 12259473. Abstract: Carbon monozide poisoning is 1 of the most fretuent causes of accidents in the world. In Korea immeasurable numbers of incidences of CO poisoning occur annually due to the use of the coal briuqette as the main domestic fuel. Many studies on acute poisoning have been reported by toxicalogists, clinicians, and other specialists concerned. But on chronic poisoning, there have been many controversies on the entity itself. There have been some reported chronic effects of CO exposure on the pregnancy and neurological changes. Actually high pregnancy wastages were observed by animal experiments. Antoher major noxious gas contributing to air pollution is sulphur dioxide (SO2). SO2 is a typical irritant gas in contrast to the asphixiant nature of CO. SO2 is also produced during the burning of coal briquettes. According to the author's previous study, a high degree of contamination by CO and SO2 was found in kitchens, restaurants, and some living rooms in the Seoul area. This study was designed to observe the effects of chronic exposure to CO-SO2 mixed gases on the gestational patterns of rats. 134 rats were divided into 3 groups, 1 for control, the 2nd for high concentration (CO, 1500 ppm, SO2, 10 ppm), and the 3rd for low concentration (CO, 750 ppm; SO2, 5 ppm groups). The experimental rats were exposed to CO-SO2 mixed gas for 1 hour during the 3 weeks' gastation period. The findings obtained are as follows: 1) High pregnancy wastages were observed both in high and low concentration groups, 40.7% and 64.2% each. 2) Pregnancy rate during the gestation period was reduced in accordance with the lapse of the gestation period. 3) Litter size and body weight were significantly reduced in the high concentration group. 4) There is a strong evidence that SO2 acts synergistically with the effect of CO inducing pregnancy wastages of the experimental rats. In summarizing these results, more extensive studies should be continued to scrutizine the real mechanism of chronic effect of CO-SO2 mixed gas. In most of the large scale urban cities throughout the world, air pollution is 1 of the serious public health problems. Synergistic effects of various pollutants are attracting the interest of environmental scientists. Among these academic topics, the chronic effect of CO-SO2 mixed gas, especially in relation to pregnancy, should not be overlooked in terms of appalling results.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
