    Abstract:
The study objective was to examine the relation of family influence to the out-of-school-youth (OSY) phenomenon. The 16 agencies in metropolitan Manila that have OSY programs were selected by stratified sampling procedures. From each agency, 20 trainees and their parents were selected for interviewing by systematic random sampling. The sample included 106 OSY and their parents. The following were included among the survey results: 1) generally, the family exerted a strong influence in the decision of children to drop out of school; 2) almost all of the OSY respondents were from families with large household sizes, low total monthly incomes, big number of children, more children out-of-school than those in school, and whose parents possessed educational levels lower than those of their out-of-school children; 3) 41% of OSY perceived parents' sadness and regrets over their being out of school, and 75% aspired for college and post graduate education; 4) a majority of the parents' occupational aspirations for their OSY children and the OSY's occupational aspirations for themselves were similar; and 5) the majority of the parents (66%) admitted the beneficial aspect of the OSY program and about 62% encouraged their children to attend the program.
