    Abstract:
    This article attempts to explain in very easy terms the complex functioning of the menstrual cycle, what it is, how it works, what it does, and what causes it. The function of the ovaries, hormones, hypothalamus and hypophysis are explained, together with the changes in quality and quantity of cervical mucus during the cycle. Ovulation and nidation are described, and changes in body temperature and in duration of the cycle are examined.
