    Author: Kisnisci HA.
Journal: Acta Reprod Turc; 1981 Oct; 3(2):67-72. PubMed ID: 12264524.
    Abstract:
From October 1972-November 1973 91 women who received spring coil and 97 women who received Dalkon shield IUDs were studied at Hacettepe University in Turkey. Mean age of the women who received the coil was 26.4 and of those who received the shield was 27.7; mean number of live births was 2.2 for both groups. Contraceptive use for the month prior to IUD insertion was recorded; 23% used oral contraceptives. At follow-up 24.2% of the coil group and 22% of the shield group had pelvic inflammatory disease and dysmenorrhea was reported in about 30.8% of both groups. At 3 months the pregnancy rate was 1.3 for the coil group and 1.2 for the shield group. The expulsion/displacement rate at 3 months was 3.8 for the coil and 2.4 for the shield; removal rates for bleeding and pain were 10.2 for the coil and 1.2 for the shield. Although the follow-up rate for 3 months was low, the continuation rate was reported as 74.9 for the coil and 87.9 for the shield group.
