  • Title: Contraceptive demand in Thailand: 1982-1986.
    Author: Prasith-rathsint S.
Journal: J Thai Assoc Volunt Steriliz; 1983 Dec; ():1-5. PubMed ID: 12266144.
    Abstract:
After the government initiated a national population policy through voluntary family planning, Thailand's growth rate fell from over 3% per annum to about 2% in 1981. Present population growth still is considered high and hinders social and economic development, although the Thai government hopes the growth rate will fall to 1.5% in 1986. This summary of the longer report, Contraceptive Demand and Supply Survey in Thailand: 1982-1986, examines Thailand's contraceptive demand and supply, using Population and Housing Censuses (1960, 1970, and 1980), Contraceptive Prevalence Surveys (1979 and 1981), and other family planning, fertility, and demographic surveys. The study relies on statistical analyses to 1) project currently married women at reproductive age, 2) project new acceptors by method, 3) project active users by method, and 4) estimate contraceptive requirements. Results show 7.25 million currently married women eligible for family planning. New contraceptive users--the pill, DMPA, and sterilization are the most popular methods-- will increase from 1,337,978 (1982) to 2,068,733 (1986). Family planning delivery systems must serve 4.9 million people in 1986, up from 3.3 million in 1982. Estimates of new contraceptive acceptors are much higher than the low targets set for 1986.
