  • Title: [Human cervical mucus].
    Author: Liu XL.
Journal: Shengzhi Yu Biyun; 1986 Feb; 6(1):3-7. PubMed ID: 12267914.
    Abstract:
Cervical mucus (CM), a highly complex secretion produced by the endocervical cells, contains minute amounts of fluid from the endocervix and uterine secretions. Extremely small amounts of folliculi liquor, as well as pieces of the endocervix and epithelial cells may also be found in CM. It is quite normal for CM to undergo periodic changes during the menstrual period in normal fertile females, as this facilitates the penetration of spermatozoa during ovulation while protecting the sperm in the vaginal tract or in the presence of phagocytes. CM also isolates inactive spermatozoa from normal sperm, and when estrogen is predominant, allows the more powerful sperm cells to enter into the gonoduct. The physical, chemical, and periodic properties of CM are discussed, as well as the effects of hormones, contraceptives, and IUDs on CM.
