Title: Metro Manila and Nueva Ecija women favor the pill. Author: De La Cueva OS, Miranda AC. Journal: Fpop Bull; 1987; 17(1):14. PubMed ID: 12268886. Abstract: A survey conducted by the Family Planning Organization of the Philippines in 1986 documented widespread acceptance of oral contraception (OC) and high levels of knowledge about the pill's side effects. Study subjects included 400 married women 15-40 years of age in communities in Metro Manila and Nueva Ecija. 55% of respondents were not using any method of contraception at the time of the survey and 32% indicated they wanted more children. OC acceptors comprised 42% of the respondents who were contraceptive users; sterilization accounted for an additional 31% of contraceptive use. In general, the pill is used for birth spacing and sterilization is selected when desired family size has been ahcieved. 55% of the 30, respondents who had previously sought advice on contraception went to family planning clinics and another 29% consulted government doctors. 48% of the women indicated that decisions regarding family planning were made jointly with their husbands; 39% claimed that the wife's decision prevails on such matters. 64% of respondents believe that OCs do not entail any serious health risks and 61% agreed that pregnancy and childbirth carry more risks than OC use. Overall, these findings suggest that women in the Philippines have more positive attitudes toward OC use than their counterparts in most other developing countries.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
