Title: Population and the issues of development. Author: King A. Journal: Global Futures Dig; 1984; 2(1):20-1. PubMed ID: 12269093. Abstract: This is a summary of the author's speech to the First Conference of the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development, New Delhi, 1984. The interdependence of population demands for food, energy, water, and the environment to sustain them demonstrates that development cannot be considered without considering resources. Theoretically speaking, there are good prospects for enough food production. More limiting is the availability of firewood for cooking. A 2nd massive problem is management of "mega-cities", over 15 million, of which there will be about 10 by year 2000. These will be: Mexico City, 31 million; Sao Paulo, 26 million; New York, 23 million; Tokyo-Yokohama, 24 million; Shanghai, 23 million; Beijing, 20 million; and Bombay, Rio de Janeiro, Calcutta and Jakarta, 17 million. In ecology, the relationship between growth and carrying capacity can generate 3 patterns: either a species is in equilibrium, it oscillates around equilibrium, or if it overshoots it either becomes extinct or nearly so. Studies on carrying capacity in human systems have not yet looked at social or cultural constraints. All these concepts need to be understood to plan development policies.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
