    Abstract:
    Some problems related to the use of abbreviated life tables to project mortality by age in Latin America are discussed. The life tables previously used, which were developed by Jean Bourgeois-Pichat in 1952, are shown to produce exaggerated male excess mortality in the first years of life. The new series of abbreviated life tables developed at CELADE in San Jose, Costa Rica, to overcome this problem is described. (summary in ENG)
