Journal: Assignment Child; 1985; 69-72():109-13. PubMed ID: 12280451.
    Abstract:
On October 25, 1985, the 40th anniversary of the United Nations, leaders of many countries and of nongovernmental organizations pledged their commitment to immunize children against 6 major diseases by 1990. This article lists the names of signers of the pledge for universal child immunization a this ceremony. The pledge notes that immunization can save the lives of over 3.5 million children/year who die from preventable diseases and enhance social progress. Universal immunization is viewed as an essential step in establishing primary health care services and achieving health for all by the year 2000. The Secretary-General of the United Nations stated that universal immunization of children can "provide a crucial element in making possible the Child Survival and Development Revolution which may well become 1 of the lasting achievements of the United Nations system." Replicas of the pledge are continuing to be signed by nations and nongovernmental organizations as support for this goal increases.
