    Abstract:
    The demographic transition that occurred in Cuba between the early 1940s and 1980s is reviewed. Demographic developments in Cuba are compared both to developments elsewhere in Latin America and to those in other Socialist countries. The focus is on factors affecting fertility, which declined from 35 per 1,000 in 1964 to 14.1 per 1,000 in 1980. The authors emphasize the effect of the Socialist revolution on demographic trends.
