Title: SOMARC witnesses CSM program launch in four countries. Journal: Soc Mark Update; 1986; 6(2):1, 3-4. PubMed ID: 12280890. Abstract: The 2nd quarter of 1986 marked the launch of product sales in several SOMARC-assisted contraceptive social marketing programs. Dualima, Panther, and Protektor condoms were distributed in Indonesia, Ghana, and Mexico, respectively. In addition, SOMARC provided major support to the promotion of the PROFAMILIA oral contraceptive in the Dominican Republic. Contraceptive social marketing projects in these 4 countries have differed significantly in terms of both organizational form and the design of product launch. The Indonesian project is unique for its extensive private sector involvement and seeks to market a variety of contraceptive products to middle and lower-income Indonesian families in urban areas who are not currently family planning acceptors. The Mexican program has introduced PROTEKTO condoms into 14,000 government-owned grocery stores and seeks to make contraceptives more accessible to C and D class consumers. The Ghana Social Marketing Program is being implemented directly by a Ghanaian private distribution firm that has contracted with a local advertising agency for promotional assistance. SOMARC's contributions to the Ghanaian program include technical assistance, management, and funding. A unique feature of this program is that pharmacists and chemical sellers are being trained by SOMARC in family planning, the correct use of contraceptives, and customer screening for oral contraceptives. The Government of Ghana has agreed to permit these specially trained individuals to dispense oral contraceptives without a prescription.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
