  • Title: Using surveys to improve youth services.
    Author: Tsodzai JR.
    Journal: Netw Res Triangle Park N C; 1988; 10(1):7. PubMed ID: 12281891.
    Abstract:
The Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council (ZNFPC) recognizes the nationwide need for information about sexuality and family planning. In addition to family life and parent education programs, ZNFPC intends to use the media to educate youth about family planning and reproductive health. ZNFPCs advice is to accept premarital sex among youth as a given, and seriously encourage the use of family planning. ZNFPC also uses surveys to plan education programs and improve youth services. A 1986 survey of 1900 young Zimbabwean adults aged 14 to 24 revealed that 30% of all women surveyed thought that oral contraceptive use posed a greater health threat than pregnancy. 1/3 of the sexually active single females had ever used a contraceptive, and only 22% were current users. Almost 40% of sexually active single men had used contraception, but only 9% were current users. More than 1/2 of the 40 single mothers surveyed had been pregnant before age 18, and most of those pregnancies were unwanted. Study results suggested that increasing condoms said that condoms were a good method, but 30% of them also reported that condoms were difficult to obtain.
