  • Title: Uganda's pioneering support organization.

    Abstract:
Uganda--and Africa's--1st acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) counseling service, TASO (The AIDS Support Organization), was established to coordinate and train a network of volunteers in a country where there are at least 6000 AIDS cases. TASO's trained volunteers are predominantly health workers who visit AIDS patients on a regular basis, providing psychological support and practical assistance. Since screening tests are not widely available in Uganda, most clients have developed the symptoms of full blown AIDS before they come into contact with TASO. The organization also runs orientation workshops for people who come into contact with AIDS patients through their work. For example, the entire staff at Mulago Hospital--from janitorial staff to physicians--has undergone this training. Most clients attend to TASO day care center where they can receive free meals and medicine and take part in social activities. TASO assumes responsibility for the education of the children of people who die as a result of the AIDS virus; at present, 172 orphans are being subsidized in this way. Future plans include establishment of a hospice for AIDS patients and a special clinic for pediatric AIDS victims.
