  • Title: Our health problems are preventable with education: maternal and child care in the Marshall Islands.
    Author: Johnson G.
Journal: Integration; 1989 Jul; (20):48-9. PubMed ID: 12282143.
    Abstract:
The Marshall Islands are scattered across 500,000 square miles of Pacific Ocean just north of the equator. Through the years, American administration stressed curative rather than preventive health care. This was ineffective. In 1985 a report concluded that the emphasis should be on preventive health programs. Health Services reorganized and a Bureau of Preventive Services was formed. A drive is on to improve maternal and child health. An all-out immunization drive was started in 1987. Public health nurses immunized more than 17,000 people. A major measles outbreak hit the Islands in 1988. Immunization teams gave measles vaccines until the outbreak was under control. A goal of the immunization program is to have all newborn children fully immunized by age 1. There has been positive community response to these prevention programs. Public health clinics are emphasizing health education and community involvement in preventing health problems. Malnutrition remains a critical problem.
