  • Title: [Demographic and health survey, Haute Vallee, Bamako].
Journal: Pop Sahel; 1990 Dec; (15):57-8. PubMed ID: 12283991.
    Abstract:
Results of the Demographic and Health Survey conducted in the District of Bamako and urban areas of the Haute Vallee in 1987 indicated that 72.8% of women in Bamako and 35.9% in urban areas of the Haute Vallee knew about family planning; but only 16% currently used a method. Only 5.6% of women in Bamako and 9.9% in the Haute Vallee used a modern method. 61% of women in Bamako and 32% in the Haute Vallee required a method. In Bamako and in Mali as a whole, though not in the Haute Vallee, early childhood mortality levels exceeded infant mortality. The survey in the Haute Vallee had the same objectives as the 1987 Demographic and Health Survey in Mali, but the Haute Vallee Survey was conducted on a larger scale to permit a more powerful analysis. Major objectives were to obtain accurate and detailed data on fertility levels, trends, and preferences in the urban areas surveyed; to assess contraceptive usage and evaluate the influence of family planning programs in Bamako and the Haute Vallee; and to furnish data on maternal and child health. The mass of data collected will be an important source for analysis of fertility determinants in Mali. The survey authors recommended that radio and television be used to provide family planning orientation and information. All contraceptive methods including male methods should be presented in detail, the inefficacy of some traditional methods should be given for correct use of methods. The family planning program should be fully integrated into all health services and especially the maternal-child health centers. Efforts to warn young women of the dangers of early childbearing should be intensified.
