    Abstract:
    Swaziland has a population of 800,000 (mid 1990 est.), covers 6704 sq. miles, has a 3.1% rate of natural increase, there are 6.2 children woman with an infant mortality rate of 130/1000 live births. The country is land locked by Mozambique and South Africa. It is a member of the South African Customs Union and part of the Rand monetary area. It experiences a higher than average male mortality rate that is associated with the heavy industry which accounts for a large portion of the employment sector. Family planning services were introduced through the Ministry of Health in 1973. Contraceptive prevalence was estimated at 4% in 1985, 17% in 1988 (28% in urban areas, 13% in rural areas). Female education level is the largest factor in determining contraceptive use Employer based distribution of condoms has been very successful. Traditionally men are resistant to family planning however knowledge of condoms among men is 90% in urban areas and 75% in rural areas.
