    Abstract:
AIDS has created a variety of ethical issues in terms of reproduction. Heterosexual transmission can result in the infection of fetuses. Health-care professionals must balance the privacy rights of women against their moral obligation to prevent the spread of illness. It is important to respect the right of competent individuals to evaluate HIV screening. It is highly possible that an aggressive HIV screening program in conjunction with therapeutic intervention for all women could achieve the public health goal of identifying infects women and stopping vertical transmission. Another issue is the value to counseling infected women against pregnancy. Many feel that the right of women to make that decision without being coerced is more important than obligation to prevent the spread of AIDS. Regardless of a woman's decision, supportive counseling must be given. Under no circumstances should a women be coerced into abortion, but abortion should always be available to all women regardless of their ability to pay. There is not way to screen infants without screening mothers and as such her privacy rights must always be considered. Complex strategies of social intervention is the only way to stop the spread of AIDS.
