    Abstract:
With the infant mortality rate of 24.7/1,000 live births, and maternal mortality at 43/1,000, in the Soviet Union, improving maternal and child health in the nation is a priority health objective. The purpose, organizational structure, and accomplishments of the Iwanovo Institute for Maternal and Child Health, in the Iwanovo District of the Russian Republic, are described. The Institute conducts research aimed at improving maternal and child health, attempts to identify factors potentially detrimental to women's health, and studies problems related to child development and children's functional and social adaptation. The Institute is divided into research units, the hospital, and polyclinic, with the former units including sections addressing miscarriage, functional diagnostics, medical genetics, the physiology of health children, perinatal central nervous system damage, and women's reproductive physiology and pathology, among other concerns. Surgery and gynecology, internal secretion gynecology, the pathology of pregnant women, physical science therapy, and an examination and consulting clinic are practitioner sections. The Institute has realized a 12% reduction in the number of premature births, a 50% reduction in the number of abortions, a greater than 65% reduction in morbidity prevalence among nursery school attendance, an 80-65% reduction in the frequency of nervous diseases among pre-school and school children, accordingly, and a 50% reduction in morbidity among high-frequency morbidity children. A method to prevent miscarriages was also developed and introduced among working women. Maternal mortality from abortion remains a problem.
