  • Title: New insights into international cooperation. China.
Journal: JOICFP News; 1991 Oct; (208):6. PubMed ID: 12284383.
    Abstract:
10 members of a Japanese study tour to China observed family planning (FP) and maternal/child health (MCH) programs in Jiangsu Province. The JOICFP's Integrated Project (IP) is in its 3rd phase and was launched in 1984 in China as a community based health strategy promoting FP and MCH and parasite control (PC). Before visiting the IP pilot sites, the team traveled to the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to observe China's population policy for ethnic minorities. The team witnessed the positive impact of the IP pilot program in Jiangning County where the county government has allocated US$94,000 to IP activities while local township and village governments have allocated US$377,000 to bolster community based IP activities. Since IP initiation the contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR) has increased from 90% in 1986 to 92.19% in 1989 and infant mortality has fallen from 24.5% in 1986 to 13.45% in 1989 in Jiangning County. A mobile X-Ray van was donated to the IP in 1989 by the Chiba Health Service Association. The van has been used to distribute IP information to all 24 townships as well as provide X-Ray services. The team also learned of the difficulties of providing health care to the Kazak minority groups because of their nomadic nature. Members of the study group said the tour showed them positive directions for supporting the FP/MCH activities in other countries as well as demonstrating the advantages of FP/MCH services integrated with other health services.
