Title: SPUC interferes with adolescents' right to information. Journal: Newsl Womens Glob Netw Reprod Rights; 1992; (38):3-4. PubMed ID: 12285432. Abstract: The activity of the Society for the Protection of the Unborn Child (SPUC) in Northern Ireland is critically rebutted. SPUC is accused of misinformation, hysteria generation, moral blackmail, and intimidation in actions taken against the Brook Clinic. The Belfast Rape Crisis Center strongly challenges SPUC posturing. The Book Clinic, in fact, does non directive counseling to the SPUC promoted "letting abortion in through the back door," and the practice of only providing the counseling option of birth. The illegal nature of abortion in Ireland does not prevent the demand, which amounts to 6 women/day traveling to Britain for an abortion. Sex education in Ireland is based on moral considerations rather than factual knowledge about sexuality and contraception, which is a poor excuse for education and decidedly unbalanced and religiously biased. There is not truth in the SPUC assertion that underage girls will be given abortions. The fact is that abortions for those 16 years require parental consent. SPUC attacks the confidentiality of Brook Clinic cases because it denies freedom of information. Incest cases at Brook Clinic are considered confidential unless the police request otherwise, and there is precedence in the practices of the Rape Crisis Center. Although SPUC desires family values and love to be within the domain of the family, the fact is that only 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 7 boys receives sex education in the home. Also, in spite of SPUC's concern about freedom of information, the practice is to block entrance to abortion clinics in Britain, prevent counseling at Brook Clinic and to intimidate women at a vulnerable point in their lives. A fair, balanced, and reasoned perspective is not provided by SPUC.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
