Title: [Analysis of the possibility that sperm immobilization activity in cervical mucus is related to sperm antibody]. Author: Hu CY, Shulman S. Journal: Shengzhi Yu Biyun; 1993 Apr; 13(2):120-3. PubMed ID: 12286671. Abstract: The authors recently developed an immunobead technique for bromelin-dissolved cervical mucus samples. Using this method, they examined a group of such samples collected from 100 women with infertility problems in order to detect antisperm antibody. These samples were also tested for sperm immobilization activity by a traditional method. In the group, 24 were only immobilization-positive, 9 were only immunobead-positive, and only 5 were positive in both methods. There was no significant correlation (p = 0.18) between the results of the sperm immobilization test and those of the cervical mucus immunobead test. The main cause for sperm immobilization activity in cervical mucus may not be antisperm antibody. Results suggest that the cervical mucus sperm immobilization test, as well as the sperm-cervical mucus contact test (recommended by WHO for detection of antisperm antibody in cervical mucus in 1987) do not have enough specificity for their purpose, although both of these tests are still valuable in reproductive medicine.
