  • Title: Indian doctors learn HIV / AIDS care skills.
    Author: Kalibala S.
Journal: Glob AIDSnews; 1993; (4):14-5. PubMed ID: 12287430.
    Abstract:
An estimated 1.6 million people are infected with HIV in India, but many Indian physicians lack the skills to diagnose AIDS-related illness. The first component of a program by India's National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) to train district-level doctors in AIDS skills, to develop counseling services, and to improve the recording and reporting of AIDS cases was a workshop on the diagnosis and management of AIDS held in New Delhi from August 21 to September 3, 1993. This paper is the report of a facilitator from the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Program on AIDS's (GPA) unit for health care support. 22 practicing physicians from major health institutions around India attended. These doctors also committed to engage in hands-on training for AIDS patient care in Uganda or Zimbabwe later in the year. The workshop and subsequent training were funded by NACO, the Norwegian Agency for Development, and WHO/GPA. It is expected that these physicians upon return from training in Africa will teach HIV/AIDS management skills to up to 1500 Indian physicians in 42 training workshops within a 6-month period. The author describes how participants outlined the magnitude of the HIV/AIDS problem in India and discussed the principles and ethics of HIV/AIDS clinical management, including counseling; highlighted constraints; and addressed medical management, international experiences, counseling, and confidentiality.
