Title: AIDS symposium calls for strengthening institutional capacity to fight HIV / AIDS and generate greater awareness. Journal: Glimpse; 1993; 15(6):1. PubMed ID: 12287622. Abstract: The "Responding to the HIV/AIDS Epidemic: Institutional Issues" symposium was held at the International Center for Diarrheal Disease Research, Bangladesh, over two days in November 1993. The symposium was held with the goal of helping Bangladeshi institutions address issues and develop institutional guidelines for HIV/AIDS issues. 200 delegates were in attendance representing the government of Bangladesh, UN agencies, nongovernmental organizations, hospitals, universities, and donors. They discussed testing, counseling, confidentiality, blood safety, staff education, research, ethics, legal issues, and human rights. It is imperative that the rights of HIV-infected individuals be ensured. HIV antibody tests and results must remain confidential, with counseling provided to clients before and after the procedures. Further, involved staff need to be taught how to avoid HIV infection both in the workplace and in their private lives. The importance of effective communication and networking between institutions is stressed in closing.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
