Title: Comment. Author: Furedi A. Journal: Fam Plann Today; 1994; ():2. PubMed ID: 12287881. Abstract: The increased use of RU-486 in British medical facilities demands a rethinking of the way abortion services are provided. At present, RU-486 is available in 122 National Health Service Hospitals and 16 nongovernmental abortion clinics in Britain. An estimated 500 early abortion procedures are performed each month. Medical facilities must devise ways to accommodate women who are in need if remaining for a recovery period of about 6 hours yet are not occupying ward beds. These women require a comfortable environment in which to recover, lavatories, and access to supportive nursing staff. Without such resources, access to early abortion will be limited. Another limiting factor has been the need for immediate scheduling of early pregnancy terminations. Preliminary studies suggest that only a minority of patients who request RU-486 within the 63 day time limit are admitted for the procedure within this time frame.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
