Title: [Proclamation of the International Year of the Family]. Journal: Fam Dev; 1992 Dec; (63):4-5. PubMed ID: 12290178. Abstract: In December 1989, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 1994 to be the International Year of the Family, the theme being The Resources and Responsibilities of the Family in a Changing World. The logo for the International Year of the Family is two united hearts under the same roof, symbolizing life and love in a home full of life, security, conviviality, and indulgence. The proclamation of the Year would rest on seven principles. The family constitutes the basic unit of society so it deserves particular attention. The form and functions of families vary from one country to the other and at the heart of the same society. Activities undertaken to celebrate an international year will aim to promote the liberties and fundamental human rights recognized for all individuals in the series of instruments accepted in the international plan under the aegis of the UN. It will be necessary to adopt policies promoting equality between the sexes in the heart of the family, equitable sharing of family responsibilities, and equal employment opportunities. International year activities will need to take place at all levels, but especially at the local and national levels. Programs need to help families assume their functions rather than substitute for them. The international year will be part of a continuous process. The objectives of the International Year of the Family aim to sensitize governments and the private sector to the problems of the family; strengthen national institutions, allowing them to formulate, implement, and monitor application of policies relative to the family; stimulate initiatives aiming to resolve problems which affect the family; improve collaboration between national and international nongovernmental organizations; and draw on results of activities led at the international level concerning women, children, youth, the aged, and the handicapped as well as other important manifestations concerning the family and some of its members.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
