Title: Final push for global polio eradication. Journal: EPI Newsl; 1999 Jun; 21(3):8. PubMed ID: 12290364. Abstract: This article reports on the launching of a global polio eradication campaign by WHO. Polio vaccination has intensified in Angola, where a polio outbreak has claimed around 800 victims. The South-East Asian Region is the largest focus of the polio campaign. Three successful National Immunization Days (NIDs) have been conducted in India; however, ongoing transmission after 3 years of NIDs indicates that immunity levels in the population at risk are still not high enough to interrupt poliovirus transmission. Shortage of routine immunization coverage is a major problem in several very large Indian states. During the World Health Assembly held in May 1999, the member countries pledged their commitment to the implementation of activities for polio eradication.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
