    Abstract:
    In 1991, the government of Finland made the following changes in social security legislation, among others: a) it harmonized benefits for men and women (for example, by equalizing the treatment of men and women in pension schemes); b) it introduced a special maternity payment for pregnant women in high-risk occupations; c) it extended parental benefits (daily allowances) by 12 working days; and d) it introduced a special care benefit payable to the parents of a sick child.
