Title: [Study on Norplant carried out by the Gabes regional committee]. Journal: Bull Assoc Tunis Plan Fam; 1995; (35):4-5. PubMed ID: 12290883. Abstract: The Gabes regional committee of the Tunisian Family Planning Association conducted a study among 262 women who had accepted the contraceptive implant Norplant at the Gabes family planning center between June 1989 and June 1994. (The IUD and sterilization are other family planning methods available in this region.) On average, 52.4 women accepted Norplant each year. The leading side effects were uterine bleeding (27.1%), spotting (22.1%), and amenorrhea (13%). 30.5% of acceptors had normal menstrual cycles. The five-year continuation rate was 65.3%. The leading reason for Norplant removal was menstruation disturbances (53.8%). 92.3% of women requesting removal due to a desire to become pregnant and those who had an unwanted pregnancy became pregnant within 12 months after removal. 81.24% of the women were 26-40 years old. 73.7% had 2-5 children. The pregnancy rate was 0.76% (2 pregnancies). 47.3% of women used contraception after Norplant removal. These findings suggest that women in Gabes are satisfied with Norplant. Norplant should take its place as a choice in the contraceptive mix.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
