Title: STDs: the burden and the challenge. Author: Islam QM. Journal: Aidscaptions; 1996 May; 3(1):4-7. PubMed ID: 12291854. Abstract: Sexually transmitted diseases (STD) are among the top five diseases for which adults in developing countries seek health care. Annually, almost 333 million people worldwide contract a STD. Despite this widespread prevalence of infection with STDs, however, governments and international organizations have long given only scant attention to their prevention and control. It is only recently that higher levels of attention are being given to STDs. Some STDs enhance the transmission of HIV, while unrecognized and untreated STDs can result in severe complications in men, women, and newborn infants. STDs remain highly prevalent even though all are preventable and the majority are curable. The author considers the prevalence and impact of STDs, STDs in the developing world, maternal and child health, obstacles to care, and the syndromic approach to STD case management.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
