Title: Country profile: Mali. Journal: Afr Link; 1996 Apr; ():19. PubMed ID: 12292579. Abstract: More than half of Mali's population is under age 20 years. Living conditions have improved considerably over the last 35 years and the average life expectancy has improved from 35 in 1960 to 50 in 1987. Marrying early, women have a low status in Mali. They have their first sexual intercourse at mean age 15.7 years, bear many children, and often lack adequate resources to care for their families. Women have easy access to neither education nor social services despite their important role in development. Only 35% of primary school students are female. In 1992, the government published its policy on promoting women's welfare. The government of Mali has many programs which address the family planning and population needs of the country. However, lack of education, sociocultural traditions, the minority Catholic population, poor communication in the northwest region, and economic and administrative factors are obstacles to the practice of family planning.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
