  • Title: Zambia project serving as African model.
Journal: JOICFP News; 1997 Oct; (280):7. PubMed ID: 12292747.
    Abstract:
The Integrated Project (IP) in Zambia covers a target population of 119,000 in 470 villages of Kabushi, Ndola Urban District, Copperbelt Province; Fiwale and Katuba, Ndola Rural District, Copperbelt Province; and Kapata and Kasoma Bangweulu of Samfya District in Luwapula Province. As of December 1996, the contraceptive prevalence rate in project areas was 46.1% compared to the national average of 25%. Between July 19 and August 2, a joint IPPF-JOICFP mission visited all IP sites with community-based distribution (CBD) programs, as well as an area near Livingstone City which has been proposed as a new project site by the project-implementing agency, the Planned Parenthood Association of Zambia (PPAZ). The IP project is a model for reducing maternal and infant mortality through community-based reproductive health/family planning (RH/FP) programs which integrate health care, nutrition, education, and skills training with income generation and environmental sanitation. The remote rural project site in Kapata had even received study teams from Uganda, Kenya, Lesotho, Swaziland, Sudan, Namibia, and Botswana. Program sustainability, however, is a challenge. The mission noted that daycare centers provide porridge to children in an attempt to fight widespread malnutrition, a major cause of under-5 mortality in the country. The daycare centers are also meeting places for CBD agents and traditional birth attendants, counseling centers, mini-clinics, and dispensaries in rural areas. Literacy classes for adults and children are provided in some centers.
