Title: Uganda marches on to quality assurance in health care. Author: Nagawa E. Journal: CAFS News; 1997; 7(1-2):12. PubMed ID: 12293015. Abstract: Before 1970, Uganda had a strong health services system. However, the national health infrastructure collapsed during the Amin and Obote II regimes, resulting in very high mortality rates in all age groups, especially among mothers and young children. Concern over HIV infection through poor health practices also became a major issue. Health practitioners in Uganda, with the support of the Ministry of Health, are now working to rebuild and improve upon Uganda's original health system. To that end, the Ministry of Health's Quality Improvement Project was launched with US Agency for International Development backing. Under the project, quality assurance is considered to be a management tool proven capable of attacking poor quality. The aim is to improve the quality of services using existing resources through a series of small steps within the scope of quotidian management activities. Uganda hosted a Quality Improvement Foundations Course in Jinja during March 10-22 for 24 participants representing 6 African countries. Through course presentations, information-sharing with fellow Ugandans, and field visits, participants were able to learn more about the efforts Uganda is making to improve its health services.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
