Title: Lessons from syphilis. Author: Watts R. Journal: Posit Outlook; 1997; 4(2):9. PubMed ID: 12293157. Abstract: In the not too distant past, drug therapy for syphilis was poor and with serious side effects. Syphilis was often ultimately fatal. There were substantial social stigmas attached to syphilis given its severe nature and spread through sexual transmission. As with syphilis, we must accept the reality of HIV/AIDS, apply strategies to prevent its transmission, and respect the rights and dignity of patients. Criminalizing the behavior of members of certain target risk groups will do little to contain the epidemic. For example, adult, consensual, private homosexual conduct should be decriminalized, as it is in Australia and other western countries, and needle exchange programs implemented, condom use publicized, and condoms distributed free of charge in selected venues. No other strategy has been shown to work against HIV/AIDS. Experience in parts of Africa indicates that HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention messages can be effectively disseminated through the workplace and influence behavior. However, the most effective communicators on AIDS are HIV-infected people themselves who are willing to go public about their condition. Empowering women through legislation and education at all levels will help check the spread of HIV.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
