    Abstract:
    Dr. Mpoudi Ngolle, director of Cameroon's national program against AIDS, stated in an August 1996 television interview that about 250,000 people were then infected with HIV in Cameroon. Dr. Amida Ghogomou believes that 78,000 of these infected people are in Northwest Province, perhaps the province of Cameroon with the largest number of people with HIV. People in the province aged 15-40 years old are the worst affected. About 40% of urban residents in Cameroon, Cote d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Kenya, Benin, Mali, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, and Djibouti are thought to be infected with HIV. HIV has spread so rapidly because donor agencies such as the US Agency for International Development, World Health Organization, and European Union-sponsored programs stopped funding government and nongovernmental organization information/education/communication programs. To earn foreign currency, Cameroon depends largely upon the exportation of agricultural products such as cocoa, coffee, and bananas. However, few Cameroonians have thought seriously about the damaging impact AIDS morbidity and mortality will have upon the economy. Existing programs, especially those which target youths, need to be expanded.
