Title: Abortion and STDs are major youth problems, says Dr. Asongwe. Author: Njoh M. Journal: AIDS Illus; 1996 Oct; 2(1):7. PubMed ID: 12293252. Abstract: The Cameroon National Association for Family Welfare (CAMNAFAW) is a nongovernmental organization which encourages responsible parenthood through family life education. CAMNAFAW's programs target young in-school and out-of-school people in urban and rural areas, offering lectures to adolescents on adolescent health at the organization's center every Wednesday afternoon. Topics such as AIDS, the relationship between boys and girls, and unwanted pregnancy are covered at the weekly sessions. Based upon discussions with participants at the seminars, adolescents perceive abortion and sexually transmitted diseases to be their most pressing problems. However, the youths believe that to effectively combat abortion, the root cause of unwanted pregnancy must be addressed. Adolescents have these reproductive health problems because they are not exposed to sex education and parents are particularly loath to discuss sex. It seems, however, that young people know that AIDS exists. CAMNAFAW's youth program is geared toward training youths so that they can teach their peers. The organization has been invited to address youth groups.[Abstract] [Full Text] [Related] [New Search]
