  • Title: New project meets women's needs.
Journal: CEDPA Netw; 1998; ():2. PubMed ID: 12294635.
    Abstract:
This article presents an overview of CEDPA activities in reproductive health (RH) service delivery in Ghana, India, Nepal, and Nigeria. The projects are supported by USAID and fall under the rubric of ENABLE, which aims to improve the ability of nongovernmental organizations to provide RH, child survival, and HIV services. The aim is also to enable women to make informed and autonomous decisions about their RH. The ENABLE project relies on a comprehensive approach to address barriers to women's control over their RH. Ghana uses peer motivators to reach youth with information and services. In Nigeria, community health workers encourage exclusive breast-feeding for better nutrition and birth spacing. In Nepal, communities are being educated about danger signs in pregnancy and delivery. In each country, women are being enabled to choose a suitable family planning method for their fertility desires and health. ENABLE is a community empowerment project that recognizes the role of community workers in promoting social change. Community health workers do more than distribute contraceptives by identifying and advocating for RH rights issues in communities. ENABLE has a new Project Director, who has extensive field experience in Haiti as part of Harvard University's Center for Population Studies and as a CARE rural health project coordinator. The Project Director spent 7 years at USAID as a Population Advisor, among other positions, with experience in Mali, Ethiopia, and the Dominican Republic.
